THE HISTORY OF THE CHEMEX
The Chemex was invented in 1941 by Peter Schlumbohm, a German chemist and designer who had immigrated to the United States. Schlumbohm's goal was to create a coffee maker that produced a cleaner, better-tasting cup of coffee by using a unique filtration method. He designed the Chemex to have an hourglass shape, made from heat-resistant glass, with a wooden collar for handling.
Schlumbohm's intention was to create a brewing device that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing, merging art and science. The result was a simple yet effective design that has remained largely unchanged for decades. His Chemex was also one of the first coffee makers to use thick, paper filters that were specifically designed to remove more of the oils and fine particles from the coffee, resulting in a clearer cup.
The Chemex's design has been praised for its minimalist and timeless elegance. The glass vessel is made from a non-porous borosilicate glass, which is resistant to thermal shock. The unique, large paper filters are thicker than standard filters and are a key part of the brewing process, ensuring a smooth cup of coffee without too much residue. After its invention, the Chemex gained attention in both the design and culinary worlds. In 1943, the device was introduced at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, where it was featured as part of an exhibit on industrial design. This helped the Chemex gain recognition as not only a functional object but also a work of art.
In the years that followed, the Chemex became popular with coffee enthusiasts who appreciated its ability to produce a clean, flavorful cup of coffee. The design's appeal also grew in the context of the emerging postwar interest in good design and innovation.
